Gears are out of sync

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have any advice on how to adjust gears? Since the cable stretch kicked in things have never been the same, with the middle gears out of adjustment, so unusable, and I cant even reach 1st and 8th. Should a new cable be all that I need?

Not quite sure what you mean by middle gears but if you can't get 1st and 8th (and the other gears are being selected ok) on the back it could be your limit screws need a small adjustment on your back derailleur.

Thank Paul, I'll trying putting how they were when I got the bike.

However the pressing issue with the 'middle gears' is that if I select 3-6 the chian jumps around between two gears quickly never settling on either.

That could be the cable tension. Try adjusting this at the barrel adjuster. On some bikes this is located where the outer cable joins the derailleur or where the outer cable joins the gear selector.

Hopefully this should work providing the inner cable isn't sticking. If you still can't get 1 and 8 but you get the other gears to work then that may be the limit screws.
