@mrandmrspoves I know I said previously I'd leave it to the LBS but I've still got to change the cable for the front mech so maybe I'll give it a try. I did one once before on an old bike with Sora flightdeck shifters and lost the trim. Had a a nightmare with it and I think it's put me off a bit!

Regarding having to re-tape after changing brake outers, there is a way round that. Shimano supply flexible plastic trunking with their groupsets which slips over the cable before it is taped and allows you to slide the outer from under the tape and re-insert without disturbing it. Bike shops rarely bother using it and it you ask they're bound to have some lying around they'll part with for a quid or two.

Saves a lot of faffing around and gives a nice comfortable feel to the bars too.
