7hrs, and all it took was opening a beer

For some reason, I could see the cable running across when looking in that hole, but after some vigorous application of force the cable head popped out

This pic seems to say it comes straight out the bottom?

If I can get the bit in the yellow bit loose with a screw driver...

Yes, it should just come out through a hole in the bottom. Photo from my spare shifter.

Yay! Sorry for the misinformation. I wasn't near my bike or I would have checked earlier.

Veloce gear cables are a doddle to fit. Unfortunately I can't remember exactly how they go even though I used them for years. But they are a cinch.

It's quite possible that this post may not be of much help to you...
