I always remove the bar tape because I find it easier to remove the old cable and it also makes it easier to thread the replacement cable into the outer.

Zinn seems to think the other end of the gear cable comes out here:

But the only bit of cabling I can see is here, is this the brake or gear cable?

Click the thumb button all the way down to release the ratchet to its home position. Then you should see the head of the cable on the inside front of the shifter - right where you've got the hood folded over in the first picture. Then push the cable through.

Edit: Might be easier if you fold the hood over from the front, rather than the back. There should be a little slot where you can peer in and see the ratchet mechanism and cable.

The exposed bit in the second picture is where the gear cable enters the shifter. You can route it either way depending on whether you want the cable to run at the front or the rear of the bars.

Replacing it would make the bike look a good deal better as well as making it easier to fit the new cable. Two repairs in one.^_^
Yeah, was planning a huge swim/ ride /run today - wanted to rush it and get out on the road ASAP.

Looks like I need to take the time and do it properly ;)

Hood rubber doesn't fold back the other way, it seems to be attached...I can see the ratchet mech for the downshifter but I don't see the end of the cable.

I'm assuming when I find the head of it I can pull it out.

The hood's only attached by a bit of rubber that plugs into the shifter housing, and can be pulled off and on, but if you can see the ratchet you're OK. Can you see it rotate as you operate the shifter? You need to pull on the cable to put some tension on it, while doing that, shift all the way down with the thumb lever. If it's stuck, shift up first, then pull the cable and shift down. The head of the cable should now be visible. Now push on the cable and you should be able to wiggle it about enough to pull it out. Long nosed pliers or forceps may help.

I really appreciate your support - this is driving me nuts!

I've got the rubber off the front and tried as you've said, shift up, pull cable, shift down...but I cannot see anything that looks like the head of the cable.

The Zinn diagram shows the ratchet as being directly under the thumb shifter, which obviously is not the case here.

Something in there must be attached to a cable!

This pic seems to say it comes straight out the bottom?

If I can get the bit in the yellow bit loose with a screw driver...
