I'm interested to hear responses to this one as my friend has an 810 with the same issues.

Used to have the same problem with my Touring. Solution was to bin it and use my iPhone with rwgps and a spare booster. Now I have no freezes and a decent map and screen.

check the 810 Garmin forum section:
https://forums.garmin.com/forumdisplay.php?362-Edge-810

check this thread:

https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?105173-Abnormal-SHUTDOWN

also check what version of software you have loaded (apparantly, v5.0 is bug free) .... the latest version has bugs...

I have an Edge 1000, aswell as the Garmin Radar unit and I frequent the Garmin forum often to see what bugs people are encountering ....

I've also learned not to download new software releases until others have tested it (Garmin tends to fix problems, but new problems occur)

I've had my 810 do it quite a few times, specifically when navigating. Removing the SD card (which had maps on it) has resolved it.

UPDATE - rolled back firmware to v5.0 to see if it did it and still does so i phoned garmin explained what has been happening and the suggested a master reset which i did first before deleting the xml file which i did again nothing happened so i phoned back again this time to be told to email the garmin file over to them so they can look into it. I got a email from 5 different support people all looking into it for one to tell me that i had to send it in for a proper look and it would cost £82.80 due to expired warrenty or by a new one . I have dug around the internet a bit more and apparetly sometimes its to do with the amunt of courses stored on the device so trying that before tomorrows training ride.

In between here and there
I have done roughly 220 hours without any issue with my 810 I was forgetful and charged it at work and it updated to 5.1 on Garmin Express and it then started freezing and turning off. Now the strangest thing was it was mostly in the morning at the coldest temp and over bumps.

I rolled it back to version 5 and that seemed to make them less frequent and now it was remembering the current ride so could restart it (but still bloody annoying). I had resolved to start the bang against a brick wall Garmin Support route (still in warranty) decided to pull out the SD card and it has not done it for 4 hours, so far.

BTW the £82 is not a repair, they will send out a refurbished one for that with a 3 month warranty.

I found I used to have a problem with mine when navigating. It would crash after a couple of hours.

Clearing all the old routes off of it and minimising the navigation points I put in when building a route using Strava seemed to help. I have had to pin a fair few rides together due to a missing bit in the middle where it has crashed!

But unfortunately you still have an iPhone, shame, not everything in life can go your way.
