I would like to know what happens when the Garmin battery runs out mid-ride?

i.e. will the Garmin save all data up until that point or will the whole ride be lost?

cheers

Not sure, but if the battery was fully charged before you left home you must be on a seriously long ride!

I don't know if they're all the same but on an Edge 800 the file gets saved up to the point when the battery dies so you don't lose everything. I would imagine they are all the same as it would be a pretty nasty design flaw otherwise.

I'm pretty sure it saves it. I can swap the batteries (aa) from mine mid ride and not lose any data.

yes. it writes everything to file all the time (that is how it works) and when you press save or reset (depending on which model you have) it simply ends the file, nothing more. When it runs out of power (something like 5% battery life) it closes the file down as though save/reset has been pressed and powers down.

IIRC a Garmin with integrated rechargeable battery only lasts about 15 hours if it's actually navigating.

Only time I have had a problem is on century rides with 800 and navigating by map view. The constant redrawing drains it very quickly. Runs out at around 80 miles.

That's why I have an Etrex 20. I mainly do two kinds of ride: my commute and rides of 100+ miles

More like 10-12 on a 705, probably the same on an 8xx/Edge Touring, not a 1000 though..... It'll last 15 hours if you use it as a bike computer with maps (i.e. you know where you're going & just check from time to time). Following a track or course uses a fair chunk more power. Continuous map view will use even more. @PK99 Best option for that is to leave the display on speed/distance etc, and have it prompt you for turns.

Yep learned that first time it did it. And did a "doh!" The second time.

Garmin should save right up until the battery dies. How long were you out for, for the battery to drop dead mid ride?

What I would like to know is what happens to the feet climbed. When I look at my Garmin summery of the ride, it will say that I have climbed 1800 feet or whatever. Then, when I plug garmin into my laptop and transfer the ride to my Garmin connect thingy, I have suddenly only climbed 350m. Not fussed about the swapping from feet to metres, I want to know where all my climbing has gone too. It steals lots of feet from me.

Had it happen to me numerous times. It intermittently saves the ride data in a temporary file that becomes permanent when you select "save".
So as your battery level falls to low level most of the data has already been saved. It's a default setting. (just like a computer does approx. every 10 mins with certain files).
It just adds to the file then shuts power to the unit off.
Every time I have recharged the Garmin the data has been saved. Only time it will not be saved is if you have changed the default setting. I am sure you would remember if you did.

My 800 has never lasted more than 8 hours on full mapping, turn by turn mode.

Never had the nerve to run it dry and carry an external charger (10 minutes at a tea stop) for rides over 8hours.
