I've got one and they're excellent.
Bear in mind though that the basic touring won't support heart rate or cadence sensors, and lacks the "training" modes of the 800+ units.
If you just need it for ride recording and navigation though it works perfectly (once set up Correctly)

Yeah just navigation and distance/route recording. An after thought is speed average. Although interesting to know it's not that critical to me. Cadence and hrm no interest to me. So you recommend kestevan?

I'd definitely buy another if mine was nicked.
And it will happily show average speed as you ride, and it's one of the many data fields you can display when you download the data to a pc.

I lost my 810 and decided to go for a cheaper replacement and if you do not need the Bluetooth, heart rate and cadence it works absoulutely fine
The speed is set up on the display menu. YOu can choose how many items appear on the screen and which ones. If you choose speed then you can (IIRC) choose to display

Lap Speed
... and given the caveat about the HR etc then it does everything a touring or commuting cyclist needs

I looked at the 520 and 800's and all this performance athlete vo2 monitoring is just too overkill for me. Cycling is a way to get out and about and stay fit. Years of playing rugby and training till I'm sick has past me now. Don't need all the HR stuff. Just ride to a speed for a distance and avoid as much traffic as I can. To be fair when I finally get up into Lake District I won't be looking at a computer for my HR, cadence etc

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Having spent 30 minutes trying to work out how to put a GPX file onto a colleague's Edge Touring for him - Garmin's own manual doesn't tell you, and the advice online doesn't seem to work - I suspect it's a bit like most of Garmin's other kit. They're very good at hardware, good at on-unit software and lousy at software to connect the hardware to the rest of the world.

I really wish it was compatible with the cadence and heart rate though! Not sure if I want to buy one and use it with my 500 or just get a 810.

Is the pre loaded Europe map good on the touring

Ive got the touring and it is excellent. I even use it on my Honda Innova. :0)
More than adequate
You can download "BaseCamp" and the same map onto a computer to play
I have a spare City Navigator card and for touring, either works

I think that is what the Touring Edge Plus is for.
