Just found some refurbished 800s on t'interweb. Only about £90ish. Firstly, is this a good price? Would I then need to pay extra to download maps etc? Also, I use my smart phone at mo, but obviously battery life is useless. How would using the Edge 800 compare to a smartphone? Would it feel small and primitive?

If the seller doesn't say it comes with maps you may need to get them but you can download from a free open source like talkytoaster. Garmin are using opensource maps in their newer 1000. If you want colour maps IMO its a good deal and the battery life is much better than a phone, garmin claim 15h. My battery certainly never let me down on 14h cycles. It never seemed small or primitive to me and I set it up to display the info I wanted. You can of course spend more and get a cleverer gps like the 1000. I've got the 1000 now and for what I do, I wouldn't say its significantly better. But I use it for mostly tracking and a bit of preplanned routes and I believe the 1000 is that bit cleverer for random sporadic planning.

That sounds like a VERY good price! Where did you see them going for that?

I have just been given an old Edge 500 but for £90 I would be tempted by an 800.
I think I saw it after one too many glasses of red, coz just checked again and was actually £126.99!
Sorry!

Ah, I think I spotted that offer!

I am going to try downgrading my 500 to earlier firmware to fix the navigation problem present in all later versions. I don't need the improvements made for power meters etc., but I DO need reliable course navigation.
