Santa is kindly bringing me a garmin edge 500 for Christmas :santa: Do I need a cadence sensor? I am a beginner cyclist and just want to track my progress as I go. If it's best that I get one, anyone know any deals going??

Thanks for all the advice from forum members since I began my cycling journey in June this year :bravo:

You don't need one.

But someone will be along soon enough to tell you that you do

If all you want to do is log your rides , see average speed etc then the 200 will do just fine.
I thought about upgrading to a 500, but soon realised i can work out what a good cadence is for me, and i can feel when my heart is pumping like a good un, so that confirmed i had no use for hrm or cadence sensors. 2 years on and i am still of the same mindset. Others love to track and record every facet of their progress, and nothing wrong with that approach either.
Cycling can be as simple or as complex as YOU want it to be - go ask yourself what you want to get out of cycling and the answers shall magically appear.

No you don't, unless you want to know what your cadence is, likewise the heart rate monitor. I started with the 200 as I just wanted to log distance etc, but upgraded to a 500 to get the HRM & cadence simply because the physio told me to train based on heart rate.

Make your own mind up fella! However I would say my Garmin 500 with heart rate monitor and cadence is the best bit of cycling kit I have ever bought!

They are right ... I have a edge 510 team which I got for a good price  came with the HRM &cadence sensors , but they are not a must to have ,but you may feel you want more info during your rides and after later on if you do sportives , training for events etc ....
I have a few road bikes , so ended up buying more cadence sensors for them , so started costing alot more

The Edge 200 would be fine. The cadence and HRM sensors for the Edge 500 are known for being somewhat inaccurate, although I have no direct experience myself - just what I've seen on internet forums!!
I have an Edge 200 and am really pleased with it - I've been a club cyclist for 25 years!

You don't need one.....but you might some day.....and even if you will never need one and you're certain of that..... do you fancy? would like to have it and know? should you just get one with hrm and cadence sensor for the extra few quid and would you rather be looking at it than for it??? I don't need hrm or cadence sensor but I had to know so got them with mine.

So let me get this straight .... I don't need one, but I might in the future ... the heart rate monitor is a good bet ... Only if I want it .... But should get both just incase I change my mind..... And maybe I should have went for the 200 not the 500 ..... How to confuse a newbie

IMO as a newbie go for the 500 with cadence and HRM. I personally don't use the HRM, but I do use the cadence sensor 5they come together as a bundle BTW. If you decide not to use them, you can always sell them on for good money, people are always after them.
