There's a quick and dirty way of getting your data into excel, but it might not be what you need....

1. Run Excel - I'm using 2003, but I think its the same on 2007.
2. Click on the Data->XML->Import... menu option
3. In the dialog, set the file filter from .xml to 'Any File'
4. Search for the tcx file you want to import
5. Open it - excel will most likely report an error and ask if you want Excel to create a schema
6. Click 'OK'

Excel should now list time, lat, long, distance, cadence etc in each row, along with a lot of other stuff that won't be of interest.

Hope this helps

Bollo,

Been down that route

I found it a bit labourious with 'Text to Column' operators.

Cheers anyway.
S'funny - I don't get that - it sticks everything in columns automatically unless I've misunderstood what you're after.

Thanks for all your advice, I purchased a 705 yesterday from the Bicycle Repairman at Prudhoe for £249.99 for the full bundle cad and HRM. Best price I found, I used it today and have to say it seems a fantastic piece of kit. Hoping to clock up a lot of miles this year and record my rides better than I have been able to do previously.

Is it possible to record you turbo trainer miles seperate to your road miles? or am I just being greedy.

Thanks

With the 305 you can set up individual profiles for different bikes, I think you could wit the 705 too. I'm still using the Garmin Training Centre and I tend to do it manually in there. Just dragging the activity into separate folders.

In Garmin Connect it refers to and online community where you can download courses etc from other users. How do you do this?

I thought, though stand to be corrected, a .tcx file was xml - that is, with <tags>. In which case, you've got your delimiters?

Yup, the file has tags ( < > ).

The text wizard allows me to choose one 'other' delimiter which I specify as < .
Then I get columns of data which are text and numericals mixed.
Then I have to operate 'text to columns' again and again until the numericals are sorted. I even have to cut and paste the relevant column headers!!

A Track off the Legend can be shown in detail by double-clicking it.
The data is displayed in a tabular form which can be highlighted, copied and pasted directly onto a MS Excel spreadsheet. EASY!

Not such the data logged by this 605.

"I use a 305. As something to record all your riding data, its superb. If you want something for mapping and route planning, then its very poor"

The 305 is excellent for route planning. Frank Kinlan's site I referred to above has a step to step guide showing how to plan a route using google mapping. I use the 305 to give me turn by turn directions using waypoints for long rides and only take my maps as back up.

Hmmmm....

Importing a .tcx gives me 'Text import widard' and asks me to delimit the text.

Too much bother.

NOT THE TEXT IMPORT WIZARD!!!!!;)

Like yello said, tcx is an xml format - use the XML IMPORT as per the instructions in my previous post!

That's not what was meant though.

It's not on the fly planning like the 705 does... it won't navigate you point-to-point via anything other than a straight line. You need mapping software to do any route planning. The 305 doesn't have mapping software.

The Garmin Edge 305 will display a "Route" which is point to point, but it will also display a "Course" which is excellent for following a route as the way points will follow the curves of the road displayed as a black line on the display. A course needs to be programmed on one of the many free mapping sites and then downloaded to the Edge
