I routinely follow the courses. Occasionally it is not always clear if you need to take an indistinct 'turn' where there is only a tiny amount of diference between the 'main road' and the one you were after, but you won't go more than 50m before you know you went wrong but after a little practice you will get much better at guessing and you can easily ignore it and work back to it at a later point. What it is not so good at is following a course backwards - so if you have a route that you want to follow both ways, either plan it both ways or be prepared to delibertaley go off the course at the offical end (your beginning in reverse) and then rejoin it. then it works better. I have followed 50-70 mile routes on it without too many issues with only the occasional missed the turn. What's it like following the breadcrumb trail? I make audax-style route sheets for unfamiliar roads - would the breadcrumb act as the next step up from this, using the route sheet as a back up?
As for the OP, I have the cateye strada cadence and the garmin 200. prefer the garmin 200 but keep the cadence for cadence. I will point out that if you forget to resume a ride after a pause, the distance is not recorded, so cometimes my cateye and garmin don't tie in...
