I got a Garmin 705 Edge, second hand off ebay with new heart monitor and cadence for £140. Its the best bit of equipment I have apart from the bike. I found it brilliant, it motivates me and and its great seeing the results. Used in all weathers, no waterproof issues at all etc

Are there any that automatically upload to Endomondo or Strava, maybe via WiFi or summit similar?

I know that you can synch your online Garmin account with daily mile, so I presume you can with endomondo etc

edge 800 is very good, if a bit complicated, edge 200 is ok for £70ish... just, tempted to return mine because it has a massive flaw that it doesnt display the clock… unless you press and hold a button to return to the menu screen where its in tiny font… it should be on the scrolling data at the bottom, and its not that small I think its the same case size as the 500.

depends what you want it to do, edge 200 if you just want to record rides and upload. (courses is good too). if you want to use a cadence sensor or heart rate strap you need the 500, 800 is the daddy of the range and can do everything

Except Wireless communication with other devices.

The 705 does and has a sharper screen as well. In fact unless you want the touch screen and OS mapping then the 705 is the better unit!

Does anyone know if the 500/800 have some sort of built in cadence calculator ? or do you still have to fix something to the frame, when I bought the bike I tried to get a cadence comp fitted (a basic one not a garmin ) and couldnt find one that would work due to the shape of my frame (bike is a Kuota Kebel )

You still need a cadence sensor; I fitted one to my irregular shaped stays on the Bianchi and its never been a problem the zip ties hold it securely.

It's the same on my dakota. You can buy the cadence sensor and use that with it. It's just that not everyone seems to know this. Same on several garmin devices if you look in detail at the specs.

the 800 doesn't have the same limitations as the 705 with regards to course points. It is smaller and the touch screen is good, whereas the 705 has a joystick which often breaks.

The ANT+ system is the Garmin 'wireless' system. It can allow you to use the Garmin heart rate and caence sensors and some (not all) third party sensors

It also allows the unit to transfer data to another unit or via a dongle to a computer.

Again the latter data transfer is available in the 705, but not the 800
