Yeah, but apparently you can't download open source maps directly. Yer man says so.
I read it as Open source maps are legal so can be downloaded directly, whereas Garmin maps have to be bought or illegally downloaded via torrent sites.
Not that I've ever used one of course

Agree fella, but not everyone would know the difference between the two methods of getting mapping and that was pretty clear from the original tone of the OP he wouldn't have a clue what they were.

I was pointing out that maps can be downloaded directly (which I've now stated umpteen times).

If someone wants to explain the benefits of using a torrent to get a map then please do.

The benefit would be getting the real deal without having to pay for it, though I suppose he could always try shoplifting it if he really didn't want to pay the price Garmin want

OK, what's the difference between the "real deal" and the downloaded by open source ones?

Frankly, I see no discernable difference between those downloaded by open source and my original Garmin city navigator.

I'll tell ya what - we will swap sd cards on the next ride.

So, back to @Doyleyburger , if you want a map you can download one from opensource mapping. From my experience I can see no discernable difference between the original Garmin city Navigator map and the open source one, so long as you pick the correct one to download.

Apologies for your thread being derailed.

If you want someone to whisper in your ear about the advantages of downloading via torrent then you'll have to look elsewhere as no-one here has a clue.
