Garmin 500 problems

I have a garmin 500 and a cadence/speed sensor. Since changing the battery in the sensor I am having problems. Some days the garmin recognises the sensor, others it doesn't. Last weekend it was ok and I got a cadence reading. Today it didn't and my ride was recorded through GPS.

I would welcome advice on how to solve this.

can you unpair them and then pair them together again

says after replacing the battery do this.
