.... most gadgets (and software) should ONLY be supplied to customers on the basis of receiving the manual a week before the actual item ... to force the RTFM process

This is true, however, the Garmin manuals are next to useless. Especially the one for the Edge 200.

My 200 came with the "manual" and CD for a 500 ... not really a problem as the 200 is pretty intuitive.

And as I said in an earlier post.
The best thing you can do is sit down and fiddle around with the thing to fins out how they work.

The 800 is definitely a nice one. I have a Garmin 705 on my commuting bike and it's still working fine after almost 4.5 years. I'm hoping the 800 will be similar, and it looks promising so far - I bought one about 4 months ago for my new road bike. Advantages over the 705 include (but aren't limited to):
  • Backlight preferences actually work properly. I have mine set to timeout and turn off the backlight, then a light tap on the touch screen will turn it on again. This is ideal for long rides where you're either riding at night, or starting before dawn, because it saves on the battery charge.
  • Data displays are much more customisable than on the 705.
  • Has a temperature field in the data displays, unlike the 705.

My 200 for some reason reset itself to defaults over the weekend but I do wonder if its memory was full and needed emptied??

They don't like being filled up, so either upload the rides, or copy them over to your hard drive - they are tiny files, but so is the 200 memory !
