First cut of the grass today. I didn't give it a skinhead, kept the deck of the mower fairly high.
Assembled my mini vertical greenhouse and screwed it to the wall ready to receive my seeds (oo-er Matron!)
Obtained 500 litres of compost on cheap, so filled my new planters with a 50:50 mix of compost and topsoil, and added some more to the raised bed. I have 150 litres left which I'll keep as I want a couple of planters for wild flowers.
Looking forward to a good crop of veg this year.

This week has been cleaning the glass greenhouse which was a very green greenhouse but is now clear - as it should be. Last year's compost has been spread on the flowerbeds and new compost added to the troughs to wait for the carrot and onion seeds to sprout.
I intend weeding the flower beds & veg plot today. I'll probably pull out most of the winer viola & pansies as they're well past their best now..
Some bluetits are nesting in a birdbox near the veg plot so I want them to gradually get used to me being fairly close to it so they don't get spooked when, hopefully, their eggs hatch.

The blueberry bushes have been pruned this morning so let's hope we get another bumper crop
Our decking is coming to the end of its life, however I thought £1400 to replace it was a bit steep.
So Mrs Gunk and I took advantage of the weather this weekend and managed to shorten it and use the off cuts to replace the rotten sections, it was a huge job but total costs were about £35 for a crowbar plus screws and nails.
we used the car Jack method to remove the met posts which worked a treat, next job is to dig a border at the end and plant it out to soften the decking.

First skim of the lawn today, just used a strimmer literally to take off the tops and level it a bit.
Our ga4den suffers terribly from waterlogging in the winter and moss is usually a big problem. I deliberately left it moderately long final cut last year, it's really thick and green now...and I've not seen much moss, apart from the boggiest section of lawn.

Decking is now all done and all the scrap has been taken to the tip. Mrs Gunk jet washed it again and we are pretty pleased with the results considering it’s 20 years old, you can see from the first photo how much we have removed. Just need the grass seed to grow and the shrubs to mature and it should look much better, we prefer the size of it. It was just a bit domineering before.
I’ve also kept a couple of sound decking boards so I still have some spares to patch again if the need arises. We intend to move house in the next couple of years, so this is definitely a “good enough will do” repair.

Crikey, the days of doing anything cheap in the garden or house, really have long gone it seems...
We wanted to build a raised garden for 2 grandchildren living with us, 1.7mtr x 900mm, a simple double decking side planked affair with a plastic liner, 9 x 40 ltr of compost, a few gardening tools for them a few packets of seeds and 6x strawberry plantlings....that's cost £125. The planter was a DIY affair out of the decking planks.
Kids loved it, it almost had them so excited it nearly all kicked off..I want to do that, grandad, it's my turn, what about mine, when can we do that...etc etc etc.
