A woman on my street used one of those and it burned her Garage down and nearly her house.

Point of order - she nearly burned down her garage and house. I'm not sure we can blame the flamethrower for incompetent usage !

No she actually burned down the Garage, not nearly.
They are dangerous, using fire to destroy weeds is just irresponsible. There's better and safer alternatives now. Its not the dark ages.
