Aha, well York matches the style of what we've been looking at and I do like the sound of the 'continuous hinge' design. I'll have a mooch at their website, can't see if they offer insulated as an option.

And a very quick update - I took a tape measure to ours and the opening we have is certainly less than 7 foot - it's difficult to be precise, as there is render slightly overlapping the frame, but I got it to be about 80 inches. We didn't know that insulated was an option - and in fact, with a wooden back door to the same garage, it would have been pointless for us in any case - so I can't answer that for you.

Wood will be fine as long as it's not permanently soaked.

Interesting thread, as I was also looking for side hinged timber doors. Does anyone know about cedar and its treatment ?

thanks, yep there are quite a few options on the made to measure front if I don't want insulated but that's a key factor. The inside of the garage is being insulated, walls and floor(ceiling is already done) and the efforts would be a bit wasted if I went for a single skin door.

I think I'm sorted with the Teckentrups the guy's coming out tomorrow to look at the piers and the widening of the opening. I've had a more detailed measure up myself and we're only talking about 120mm. The frame itself is box type aluminium so we should be able to fill that with insulating foam as well.

It's never going to be a garage again MacB so why not just put a small door in with a fixed obscure glazed sidelight... much simpler... though if you are doing anything other than straight garage door replacement and converting a garage to a room, you should get planning approval... it's not in a Conservation Area or listed as well is it?

nope not a conservation area and I did check closely that what I'm doing falls short of requiring planning intervention. If I'm really honest here we've finished the house refurb and this is the 'man-cave' refurb that I wanted to follow it. It gets bloody parky trying to fettle bikes in the cold months and it made sense to start with insulation etc before throwing too many portable heaters into the mix.

You're right though it won't be a garage in the conventional sense but then it hasn't been since we moved here anyway.
