Another fan of the buff here. Bought the merino one the other day after losing my el cheapo imitation. A mighty fine improvement to say the least.
Went out today with the girlfriend, and used my buff ninja stylee, goodbye frozen nose, goodbye frozen head, goodbye frozen ears, hello warmth. So much warmth for so little material it's nearly untrue. Okay the merino buff is near twice the price of a normal buff, and I had to plead with my girlfriend to be allowed to buy it, but it's longer than the normal buff and has been worth it's weight in warmth so far.

I am a laydee and have plenty of hair, it's just my ears that get cold. I favour one of the skiing type headbands, it just protects my ears without overheating what passes for my brain.

Haha! Great ideas everyone, and Amherichion - you just sold it to me. Google, here I come...

Thanks everyone.

Buff & a cotton cap for me.

The Rapha winter hat is very good (and was excellent value at £25 - predictably, it's now £35, although very few companies make proper winter cycling caps, i.e. with peaks) and has a fold down bit to cover your ears.

Aldi skull cap as already mentioned.

But I also bought some Aldi Motorbiking balaclavas - very thin and made of lycra. Skull cap alone great up up 0c, balaclava and skull cap great for anything colder.

I also have a buff which I wear when it's milder.

Last year, I decided to go for a walk on the kind of chilly day when somebody might just happen to drop a Gore skull cap my size on a bridleway. Any warmer and he'd probably have left it at home. Any colder and he'd probably have been wearing it.

So, there I was, walking along a bridleway, 1,200 ft up in the Pennines when what did I spot in front of me...?

Yep, cow pats! But there beyond them lay a Gore skull cap. I picked it up and discovered that it was in pristine condition and it smelled freshly-laundered, and what's more - it was a perfect fit for me!

I did the decent thing and scoured walking and mountain biking forums for anybody mentioning that they'd lost it but after a fruitless fortnight I declared it mine. Very effective it is too. When it is really cold, I cover my ears with it. On merely chilly days, I leave my ears uncovered. I wear a CycleChat Buff round my neck and can pull that up to cover my mouth and nose when conditions are really bad.

There's only one way for cosy ears and that's Earbags  If they're good enough for the Swedes, they're good enough for me and I've tested them to 40mph and they remain in place with no visible means of support.

keep the Buffs for your head/neck and give your ears a treat
