Shut Up Legs

I prefer Shimano freehubs, because one of the features of bicycles I find most appealing is that they're quiet. Although I have to admit having one of those rattlesnake freehubs would be useful on shared paths as a pedestrian-early-warning-system (PEWS) (early warning for the pedestrians, that is).

If the spring is the ring one then if it fails I would not expect the freehub to work. If it is the individual spring design then it could work with one or two bust springs.

I think you just undo a nut at either end and take the hub apart - be careful to take note of which part goes where though.

The pawl arrangement is the same in the Campag Khamsin hub, when the "ring" type spring in mine failed the hub still functioned, but not on 3 pawls. I can't remember what alerted me to the failure, whether it was a different noise or more "play" when taking up the drive. If I was @Kestevan, I'd be taking a look at it, just to be on the safe side, (get a replacement spring first though, they're not that readily available).

Thanks gang. The odd thing is that the wheel seems to be functioning as normal - no slack on take up of drive or anything - it's just running silently. Clearly something is wrong though so I'll be taking it apart. Fortunately this is the winter wheel set, so no rush to track down a new spring if that's what it is.

On that subject, any tips on where to get parts for Fulcrum wheels?

my Campag Khamsin pawl spring bust and the only time i knew about it was when the sprocket on back wheel kept revolving even when i stopped peddling - only for a brief second but it meant the chain tightened on bottom and went slack at top till something gave and it gave a loud noise and went back to normal . this happened a couple of times on the way home so i took wheel to bits and saw the spring had snapped , trip up the lbs and 2 days later i got them but had to buy little bag of 5 - must be common for them to go  cheap though

I am stuck in mid progress servicing a fulcrum 7 free hub, there are individual wire springs on each of the three pawls, cleaned and re-greased, still as noisy as ever. All I need now is a bearing removal tool so I can swap out the worn 6001 wheel bearings.

Took it apart this morning. How easy was that! Spring has snapped, but was still holding the pawls in a semi-open position, which probably explains why it was still working. Only a matter of time before it gave up completely I think. On mine it's just a single retaining clip that goes all the way round. Part number 5-R1-015 according to this http://www.fulcrumwheels.com/system/documents/files/ROAD_Spares_Fulcrum2013-23-10-2012.pdf

Just need to find a dealer now.

Cheers all.
