I think i've found the cause of an maddening clicking noise my bike has been making.........
This morning, the damned clicking was replaced with a graunching metal on metal noise, followed by a twang.

The clicking noise seems to have stopped, but so has the (much quieter) clicking from the Fulcrum freehub when I stop pedalling.
Doesnt seem to be any further ill effects - I completed the remaining 8+ miles into work with no problems.

I'm sure someone else reported a similar issue with a Fulcrum 7, but I'll be damned if I can find it...

Anyhow, question is should I try and open up the hub and see what has gone twang, or is it safe to just leave it and cycle in peace for a while

I serviced the centaur-grade hub on my Campag Protons a while ago: took it apart, cleaned, regreased, fitted new bearings etc. When I'd finished there was almost no click. I was gutted.

A good hub should be seen and heard.

Too much grease?

I use the freewheel on my racing 5's instead of a bell - Beautiful

I noticed Today (first ride after the replacement of the pawl spring) that the clicking is a LOT quieter now  People may think I have Sh*mano  Probably over-cooked it with the teflon grease, so might take it to bits again and clean off some excess!

Is this an easy job? Or is it best left to LBS? My Fulcrum 7 freehub has suddenly gone silent, even though it seems to be working fine.

Campagnolo (and therefore Fulcrum) usually have a three pawl system (can't find any tech docs on the 7).

As here

d1dd_ringle_pawl.jpg

The pawls (silver bits of metal) interact with the angled teeth on the hub. They skip over these teeth when turning anticlockwise ( this causes the clicking) and dig in when going clockwise (which causes the wheel to turn),

The normal spring is a very thin ring which you can see in the pic.

However Campy do occasionally use individual springs like those in a biro for each pawl.

If the spring is the ring one then if it fails I would not expect the freehub to work. If it is the individual spring design then it could work with one or two bust springs.

I think you just undo a nut at either end and take the hub apart - be careful to take note of which part goes where though.

wish my fulcrum 7's didn't make the awful noise they do! Thinking about putting them on the commuter I'm building up as they are a good pedestrian alert system! Then get something nicer for the best bike :-)
