On my Domane i have a FSA headsest and the bottom bearing is knackered so i thought i would buy a whole new headset.
I have a 1.1/8" top bearing and 1.5" bottom, i asked wiggle and they said this one http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/fsa-orbit-c-40-tapered-integrated-headset/rp-prod84328 is the one i want, so i took the old one out and on the bottom bearing it sits on the fork and then obviously into the bottom of the frame, but the new one came with a crown race and the bearing is 1-2mm taller and doesn't go into the bottom of the frame, i did sit the new one directly onto the fork and its sits on it ok but even if the new one did fit there would be a 1-2mm gap between the fork and the frame.

Any ideas.

Thanks

Wiggle told you to go to CRC? Wow!

Did you fit the crown race and did you take the old one off? Also have to compared the sizes with your old ones?

At the time wiggle didnt have it in stock so i went elsewhere.
My old one didnt have a crown so i dont really know wether to use it, where the forks joined the stem is tapered and the new one sits nicely on it the fork/stem it just when is sits in the frame it seems to big.
The old one falls out of the frame so i presume i dont need a headset pressing tool.

It will have a crown race. You may have to slide a stanley blade in to remove it. With sealed bearings it's no so important to replace it as they don't wear like the traditional type. If you've compared the old bearings then I'm sure it will be fine. It's ok to have a little overlap. Post a pic to have a look?

No expert but doesn't look like a crown race to me.

Only solution I can think of is to read the part number off the old bearing and go and get one that's identical, rather than trying to fudge it.

I beg to differ and say that is a crown race! Looking at the bearing then I imagine it may not come of easily but you only have to move it a tiny bit and it will pop off. Try going at it gently in the same way (loosely speaking!) that you'd scrape wallpaper off, you'd go along the top of the crown not the steerer tube if that makes sense,

I've tried to get a Stanley blade underneath and pop it up but it seems like it's part of the forks.
Even if it does pop off, the bottom bearing doesn't fit in the bottom part if the frame.

As usual with these things it's very hard to visualise the problem you're trying to put into words.

If the new bearing doesn't fit *inside* the head tube of the frame then I would say you've not got the right bearing.

If it does, then is the supplied crown race the same dimensions as the thing that's stuck on the bottom of the steerer (that may or may not be a crown race!)? If so, can you clean up the steerer and re-grease, and then just use the existing one?

OK, well have you googled your problem? You are not alone! The lower bearing does appear to be slightly different to standard but as above, it's difficult to picture what you mean by the new one not fitting...

Still think you've got a crown race on there though ;-)

To be honest there is only so much you can explain on here. A bike shop would probably charge you £20 tops to fit it.

You can see the height difference obviously the shinny ones are new, ive tried yet again and the new ones are 51mm and my old ones are 50-55.5mm.
