Front wheel problem

My front wheel seems to move to the side slightly when I tighten the QR skewer. The movement is only really noticeable when the skewer is released, and the amount of movement is only a couple of millimetres but it is enough to make one side of the front cantilevers not move equally with the other side - if you get what I mean. The skewer is not bent, and the brakes have equal movement right up to the final tightening of the skewer, after which one side, although not fouling the wheel, has slightly restricted movement. When loosened, the front wheel gives a slight kick to the side.
Don't want to give the impression that this movement is large, it isn't, but it can't be right and I don't know what is causing it.
Everything otherwise is working fine and in good condition. My only thought is bearings, but I may be wrong. can anyone advise please if you know or have experienced this yourself.
Thanks all.

Always fit front wheels with the wheel on the ground and weight on the stem/bars, this prevents the wheel moving in the dropouts.
Wheels should be central in the forks, then the brakes adjusted/trimmed to be central to the wheel. If the wheel is not central in the forks, reverse the wheel and check again this should tell you if the fault is in the wheel or the forks.

The drop outs could also be slightly out of alignment. So long as the wheel is centred when done up, adjust your brakes distance based upon that.

Appreciate both replies.Wheels are central and brakes adjusted to fit. No movement in the dropouts with the skewer tightened almost fully. the final tightening just pulls it over still.
