Front or Rear Derailieur Adjustment First?

Now I'm finished for the year... I thought I must get around to tinkering with the gears (=probably messing them up really bad).

The front one is rubbing on quite a few combinations - I think it may not be alinged properly so for example on the biggest ring it will rub when in 7, 8 and 9 at the back of the derailieur. I think it is changing between the rings approximately correctly.

The rear I am slightly happier fiddling around with...

But is there an order to which one I should start with first?

Also could be a separate problem ... its Deore 9 speed - and has a little dial split into 3 sections with no numbers. Gradually over time the red marker seems to be moving... so that when its in the lowest gear it displays it as if it was on the 2nd one instead:

Is this going to be to do with cable stretch? The actual gears at the rear are correct - just the display is wrong.

You could just ask mickle or I (as I am coming down to day) to show you?

(Can't ask Mickle he's already shown me once ... it would be too embarrassing to admit that I didn't take everything he told me in :biggrin::blush:- I'm not a really technical person - but I can just about fiddle with the rear gears - not to get them perfect but so that at least the numbers and cogs line up - thanks to Mickle).

PS - you won't tell Mickle I said that, will you?:becool:

Why doesn't the red line go in the right place?

Rear first. You need to put the chain in the lowest gear on the back in order to establish the front mech's resting position or starting point.

Thank you - just back in from the dentist - clean bill of health, and now visitors are expected for lunch - so I will have to look at the bike after they go.

And with the front do I start with the smallest or biggest ring first or just aim to start with reducing the rubbing first if the angle is wrong?

I think one can assume that the front mech is in the right position and that the cable has stretched a bit, it should be a simple matter of adjusting the cable via the barrel adjuster on the LH shifter.

Right I have had another look and the following is true:
Smallest chain ring: OK 1-7 rubs 8+9
Middle: OK 1-6 rubs 7-9
Large: OK 1-6 rubs 7-9

And this is what it looks like on the largest front ring smallest back cog combo:

So is that a fiddle with the LH shifter?

It might be an illusion but your front mech does not look in alignment with your large chaimring./ Its probably received a knock.
The front face of the cage should be aligned perfectly parallel with the large chainring when looking from above .
