I am building a flat bar commuter bike using shimani deore trigger shifters, fsa 46/36 front crankset

what front mech should i get?? and can i use the triple shifter even though its going to be a double upfront and not triple???

cant use the current front mech off the 29er as its a top pull and not a down pull thats used on the boardman frame

I don't know if this is any help but on my MTB I have gone 2x9 using 3x9 XT shifters and removing the small granny ring from a 9spd triple chainset. I have also used the existing mid 1990s XT triple front mech. This is set up to use the first 2 clicks of the L/H shifter (the granny and middle chainring positions) to move between the middle and big chainrings. This works great with good shifts everytime and no chain rub. The surplus position on the shifter is locked out by the mech hi limit screw.

I also have the Deore M590 3x9 shifters on my hybrid and the action of these is identical to the XT ones so I can't see why this won't work for you if set up properly.

I'd use 2 and 3 on the shifter so as not to forget and try forcing it up to 3 and possibly breaking the cable.

It could be said that I am a bit of a gorilla, but even I would be hard pushed to accidentally apply enough pressure to a shifter to break an otherwise healthy cable.

I use positions 1 and 2 as then you have the lo-limit screw to accurately set the mech position for the smaller chain ring and can concentrate on optimising the cable indexing to get the right position for the larger chain ring (with the hi-limit screw to ensure you don't have too much overshift, a little is desireable). Otherwise you have to be lucky enough to get the indexing right to suit both chainrings and this isn't ideal when we are using a mix'n'match of 2x9 & 3x9 components and a front mech from the 90s
I also use positions 1 & 2 to avoid having a rattling slack cable if position 1 is accidentally selected.

i have to get a new mech anyway as the mech on the 29er is top pull, but glad i'm on the right track with the shifters. i'll use position 1 and 2 on the shifters as per your reasons above

It's your choice but try both sets of positions and then tell me which is easiest to set up and stays good as the cable beds in with minimum tweaking

i think the option of 1 and 2 sounds better, with a lil overswing on the big ring to avoid chain rub
