It's probably strange for most but I find it much easier to work with the bike upside down, plus I don't have a bike stand just a chair to balance the saddle on and a garden table the handlebars! What I did was lay the cable in front of the mech rivet, rather than behind it. When the cable was behind the rivet is was catching and not releasing all the tension and acting against the internal spring of the mech that pushes it over. I realized this when I was shifting down, getting nasty rub and by pushing on the mech manually I saw that there was extra movement that was being restricted by the cable.
The braze on is a weird one, there's cracking of the paint but I presume that's due to years of flexing. The braze on is tight on the tube thankfully however. Certainly one to monitor. The tube is a weird aerodynamic elite boardman shape. Not sure Araldite would hold for that long.
