Front mech doesn't shift into big ring.

Might it be possible to 'adjust' it with a small file?

Possible but time consuming.

Would a band-on front mech do the job?

Still don't know what the problem was but at least the bike can go out for sale, and I got some extra experience.

One important lesson was remembering, having changed the front mech, not to cable it up to the shifter for the rear.

I was distracted because I had to help my work experience student. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Well done, I was going to suggest removing the FD and one of the rings and "upgrading" it to a more modern 1x transmission and sell it for 10% more!
