Usually it is stamped on the inside of the mech clamp if made by shimano, but as you are not keen to take off the mech then that could be tricky
31.8 standard on road bikes. There will be some extra pieces of metal inside the mech clamp to make it 28.6 if you have a smaller diameter seat tube. These can usually be seen without removing the mech.

Yes, sounds right. The larger size is common on aluminium bikes.
