I think I misread what you were saying.

Saying that run two of them on AA batteries rechargeable and non rechargeable

I thought you were saying have 1 light using rechargeable and the other light on non-rechargeable!

It seems you were saying the lights take either type of batteries?

what's wrong with your curtrent light?

I have a moon meteor (I think) which is bright enough for canal towpaths etc

I was wondering the same thing. I have two Moon Meteors on my bike set to give a good spread of light and on overdrive I can see well enough to blast down an unlit country road at 30mph. Unless you're going off roading I fail to see why you'd need anything better.
