The last set of s/h forks I bought needed the dropout width widening, the slots opening out with a file (designed for old imperial axles), the steerer cutting down by an inch and realignment in two dimensions! They were sold to me as 531 and I'm not convinced. They did, however, solve the problem of front brake rub on climbs - the original fork on that bike was just too noodly.
