front derailleur chatter

Hi all

Had my bike for a few days now and noticed on certain gears the front derailleur touches the chain

I have double chain rings at front and 10 rings at the back.

When rear is on smallest ring and front on large ring I get chatter and vice versa

Is this supposed to be like this? I've watched a load of YouTube videos and spent some time adjusting the front derailleur but just can't get it spot on,

Maybe a visit to lbs?

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...

Are you sure? Large/Large and Small/Small (cross-chaining) causes the problem you describe, and is common to many if not most set ups, and is to be avoided, as it increases wear on the chain and sprockets. If you are getting the problem with Large/Small combinations maybe someone else has the answer?

You get this when the chain is running at an angle - hence the trim feature which moves the front mech but only slightly.

This video sort of explains it (quality ain't much!)

Thanks guys. Managed to get it right I think, now only chatters when both cog and chain ring at each extreme but won't be doing that anyway when riding.

Although the step in the tech doc about pulling the gear cable with your hand and tightening didnt work, had to use a pair of pliers to pull the cale tight a the screw end.

Still can't seem to find the adjuster screw for the front mech, I have a jagwire inline thing, is that it ? Does nothing when I turn it.

Oh and I've learnt about trimming now too lol

Anyway i think it will be ok until my 6 week service,

If its the same as mine (defy2), there is a barrel adjuster that comes out of the side of the hood.
There is a barrel adjuster on that

But if its the new 105 its internal, so should have an adjuster inline of the cable between the STI and the deraileur.

This might also help

The adjuster should be on the left side of the steerer head.

If the 'Jagwire Thing' isn't doing anything it is either broke (not sure how) or your cable is still too slack and as you adjust it it is not having any effect; although I'd assume (possibly/probably wrongly) that if it was that slack it would hardly be able to change at all.

Thanks guys

I've booked it in to local lbs as I've Freyed the end of the gear cable at the dereailleur end.

They will replace cable and sync all the gears for very little money.

Once done I ain't messing with it again

You may have to mess with it again as the new cable will stretch, but once set after that it should be fine

I took my giant back to the shop as it was dropping the chain and was shown the chatter by the guy resetting the gears . He said it was normal and to give another half a click to move the derailer over . Was he telling me porkies ? It seems to work .
