Front derailleur adjustment - clunk on downshift

I'm new to bike mechanics but fancied having a go at working on them myself. I've just put a new chain on and then noticed the front derailleur was brushing the chain when on the big ring - thought it would be a quick adjustment - several hours, much swearing, screaming "why did I ever start this" and browsing old posts on here I've finally got it set I think.

Only problem is there is now a noticeable "clunk" on downshift from big to small rings. It shifts in both directions really quickly, there's just a reasonable amount of pressure required to budge the downshifter and it makes a bit of a noise (more than before). This is Shimano Ultegra with Flight Deck shifters. My principal concern is whether its damaging anything in the shifter - if not would still be nice to know what's causing it so I can make it nice and quiet again.

How stiff is the shifter lever when you downshift ?
I am thinking the cable tension might be too tight

Its pretty stiff. Would it be best to slacken it off at the derailleur end or via the barrel shifter?

Brilliant thanks both - slackened off the cable just a fraction and it now shifts as well as it did when I bought it. Thanks again.
