Front Derailier Trim

I am aware of the trim function on my racer, with it's 10 speed double drivetrain, but I had never noticed before that my Hybrid flat bar appears to have a trim function. I'm a little surprised as I've owned the bike for several years and ridden it a reasonable amount. I'm not convinced it's always been there, is it possible this is some kind of wear and tear? I noticed it toady when I was tunning up the front shifting. It's a shimano 8 speed triple (standard hybrid gearing 48/36/26), as far as I know they were basic shifters, nothing special. In both the middle and high gears there are two positions, though they only work when shifting up...and no trim in granny gear. Have I really been blind to this function all this time?

Unless I read that wrong, it is suggesting I have a trim feature for using when on both the big cogs, and it trims down. definatley not the case with mine! Mine only trims up, on the middle and high gears. I had a look and the model number is ST-EF-50-L for which I can't find a tech document. Reading about the other model you posted I guess it's likley that it does have a trim function. Just surprised I hadn't noticed it, I think it was 2007/8 I bought the bike

This is the tech doc and that model shouldn't have a trim function. If I were you I would release the cable at the front mech, check the cable can slosh around unimpeded and smoothly within the housing, and if so pull it with your finger maintaining cable tension while operating the levers - I think you should find that it has no trim.

Those brifters are nearly bullet proof ime, and not too difficult to open, clean up and put back together.
