Bit of a blond question I bet, but having a bit of grief with the front deraileur on my bike. It is a 2 ring jobbie. The problem is that when I'm on the small ring and a higher gear (smaller rear cogs) and try and shift onto the larger front ring it overrides off the rings completely.

Thing is that when I am in a low gear (1st/2nd) and try to shift from the smaller to larger ring it can be quite a struggle (need to give the lever a fair old tug!)

I have fiddled with the adjuster screw numerous time to try to get it too work, but if I get it working well for one situation, it doesn't work for for the other.

Am I being completely dim and missing something and what can I do?

It worked well previously, I had the cassette and chain replaced a couple of months ago and all seemed well, but started playing up a couple of weeks ago.

Start from scratch; disconnect the cable, make sure the mech's moving ok, set the high & low stops then reconnect & adjust the cable.

What size chain rings and rear sprockets have you got? For some reason I'm guessing that they're widely spaced. 50/34 with 12/27?

I've heard this before, why exactly is this? So effectively a 20 speed bike is only an 18 speed? and so on.

I do refrain myself from using these combinations but without real reason as everytime I have there hasn't been an issue?

not even that. it's one of the best marketing cons in bicycles.

if you look at this page and from the top mountain drive icon, select function, you'll see that a '24' speed bike only actually has 14 different ratios.

and as others have said, even though they are duplicated, it's best not to use them in certain configurations as even if they do work, they'll wear out even more quickly than dérailleur transmissions normally do.
