Well, that was a FNRttC with a difference. Never before have I found myself alone for long stretches of a pitch black road with only the stars for company. And what stars! I found myself veering off towards the edge a couple of times because I was too busy looking upwards rather than forwards!
It all worked like clockwork from my viewpoint. The police escort meant us marshallpeeps at the front had very little to do. Seeing the expression of one cabbie give a cyclist lip only then to notice "POLICE" emblazoned across his top is one of those fond little moments that will be cherished. The marshalls, the Martlets folk - all fantastic. Thankyou for your hard work.
Glad you enjoyed it, Upsidedown - and you got to Brighton way before me. I do have to apologise for not introducing you to the rest of the FNRttC crew. I will the next time (otherwise I may be disowned!).
Aperitif seems to have caught me in an uncharacteristic moment of weakness. This will be Remembered.
After a leisurely breakfast i set off just after 6, back to the Beacon passing the long string of riders looking pleased that they were almost home. Tigerbitten winding up the pace down into town. Fab sight from the beacon of the mist with the sun just up, stopped to say high to Andy A & team and then onward to(how far i could get by 9) Reigate.
Ah... So that was you I passed on my way down to Brighton. I would have waved but I was too busy
trying to set off the speed camera concentrating on the road.
I think the best part was seeing the smiles of the Martlets riders. London to Brighton may all just be in a night's work for us, but for someone who's never cycled more than a few miles before, it's an Achievement. Well done all!
