Cycling took me to stay in Cardiff this weekend and I had a bit of a look around. I thought I'd post in case anyone travelling for next months' ride had an early train and hence time to kill.
I've been there before but only to watch rugby matches so I'd seen nothing of the city. This time I had a late night ride to my hotel, a few trips across the northern suburbs and a ride back to the station on the Sunday morning. I saw a lot more of it than I had before and I was impressed. Things I particularly noticed were:
- much greener than I had expected. Lots of parks and water close in to the centre
- elegant public buildings, from the ancient Castle to the University to the College of Music and Drama, which is under construction and looks fabulous. Unfortunately I didn't stumble across the Senedd and Millenium Waterfront.
- some very pretty suburbs, including hilly streets of large Victorian houses which would not be out of place in Hampstead
- friendly locals I - as I was riding past an interesting looking building (which turned out to be Welsh Assembly Govt. offices) on Sunday morning, the only person passing was a big guy with tattooed forearms. I thought, 'Why not?', and stopped to ask him what the building was. He then spent a few minutes describing the buildings in the area (the University, council offices, etc) and where best to see them from.
- friendly locals II - I had a bit of time before my train so thought I'd do another loop along the river. As I approached the backpackers hostel on Fitzhamon Embankment I saw there was a guy standing on the path taking off his clothes, presumably for a dare, and being cheered by his mates who were having breakfast. The finale of his strip happened just as another cyclist and I approached, we exchanged greetings, and as his mates cheered again.
I left wanting to have a bit more of a look around (although not by that hostel!); it's somewhere I'd consider worth a weekend break.
