You beat me to it. I first hear of Big Mamma Thornton on the radio where they interviewed one of the songwriters. His writing partner told him him that "Hound Dog" was in the charts. Surprised he said "with Big Mamma Thornton?" Turned out it was the Elvis version but as the guy said "I was a bit disappointed, but after a couple of visits to the bank I got used to it"
I bought Big Mamma's compilation CD that day - she's much better blues singer than Elvis
