There was a David Bowie exhibition at the V&A some years ago. I went along with a couple serious Bowie fans. They were entranced by all the stuff, but I noticed a serious absence of the Laughing Gnome. It had been airbrushed out of history Soviet Stalinist style. I asked - where is the Laughing Gnome? I got some very bad looks and I thought I was about to be dragged off to a gulag.

Comrade! We do not speak of ... the Laughing Gnome. Now let us look at some more glorious Bowie artifacts. See! A fag end from his days in Berlin!

I detested it then and still do now. Especially if a DJ played it as a fun interlude to an otherwise very average night at the student union.
