According to Wikipedia the Exeter Ship Canal was the first in UK, but I don't know if it is the deepest.Unless that 'Cut' is the Leeds - Liverpool Canal, which is only about 4 foot deep in places (Dowley Gap, for one)
I ride the Leeds/Liverpool occasionally, a few years ago they drained the aqueduct to work on it, I was surprised how shallow it was.
