That's quite an interesting song. It started off as a broadside, a song printed on a page of paper. It was called Oxford Girl in England and Wexford Girl in Ireland before migrating to America. I think it may also have been called The Bloody Miller. In one version of the Oxford Girl, the singer was an apprentice to a miller. He persuade a girl to have sex with him, promising to marry her. Then he decided he was too young to marry, so he killed her. Charming.

In the early versions there's no retribution for his crime, that was only added in later when the Americans rewrote it. Savages ent we?

I'm not sure about that. There's an interesting history of it here. Interestingly, there was a version called The Berkshire Tragedy, where the murder appeared to take place in Wytham, which was then near the border between Oxfordshire and Berkshire. (It was bloody Wilson who changed the county borders, wasn't it?)

I thought it was a bit odd that in The Knoxville Girl that they didn't hang him, but then The States outlawed capital punishment before bringing it back. In The Knoxville Girl there isn't a motive for the killing, or any mention of the them having slept together, or her being pregnant. Maybe that offended their religious sensibilities.

This schmalzy old tosh is always voted the best country song ever. The Possum's glorious come back in 1980, from his album 'I Am What I Am' - He stopped loving her today...stick with it, it's great!

That song nearly tore me apart when I first heard it after I dumped someone who had a breakdown because of it.

Here's a modern classic, nobody does death like a C&W artist -
