Freezing Toes....

Had a great cycle tonight. Only planned to go for an hour or so but ended up doing thirty odd miles, under the tyne river using the cycle tunnel and into South Shields and back North again, getting lost, pushing the bikes through cornfields, relying on locals to save us and point us in the right direction, getting home after dark and convincing the wife we hadnt detoured via the pub...

Brilliant, except the freezing toes, which is becoming an issue. I took advice from here a couple of months ago and bought some of those merino wool socks. The shoes fit fine. My whole body is fine except my toes. This time only the toes on my left foot have frozen - the right foot is fine.
I presume I should be doing something I'm not. You can't buy toe warmers can you?
I have overshoes but didnt wear them because it was dry. I bought them at the same time as the wool socks but havent actually used them yet. Not sure if they would make a difference. I wear shimano clip on shoes if that makes any difference.
Any advice greatly appreciated as it aint nice to have your toes freeze

Make sure your straps aren't too tight, might be stopping your circulation. Also not as effective as overshoes but a couple of sandwich bags over your socks in the shoe can help. It stops wind chill as cycling shoes often have lots of vents so you don't overheat on a hot day.

For commuting this time of year i cant be bothered to carry overshoes so i go for the sandwhich bag , carry a couple and if it looks like rain then i bung them in, they also keep the chill off first thing in the morning.
Bradley Wiggins puts cling flim over his socks and overshoes for winter training.

If only one foot is affected then I think it's likely your shoes are too tight, as Hacienda suggested.

Either way, if you do need extra insulation these shoe shields aren't as bulky as full overshoes and easier to put on.

Thank you folks. Lots of replies. I should probably just wear the bloody overshoes I bought and see what difference that makes. I don't think the shoes are too tight - it's usually both sets of toes that freeze, just not last time. And I don't have straps, I have clip ons. Overshoes and more wiggling will be my next step, although its supposed to be getting warmer soon.I will check out those shoe shields and also try plaggy bags.
As for Start Cycles in Newcastle I've heard good things about that shop. It's my birthday in June and the Mrs has agreed to just give me some money so I can go there on the day, top up with some of my money and have a mooch. It must say something about me aged 42 where I want to go to a cycling shop on my birthday rather than anything else.
Again thanks. I'm loving my cycling loads. I'd like to be able to afford a nice road bike, or tourer, but my hybrid will do for the next few years.
