Well I went out at 7.30 this morning and boy was it cold! Went to meet 515mm in the usual spot and as I turn in the the road think to myself looks like black ice there and on cue the front end tucks under and down I go. Thankfully no damage down except to my ego. ;) I get back up, just, as my shoes are slipping and sliding about like a drunk giraffe on roller skates!
Ouch. I'm dreading my traditional winter 'off'. It hurts more the older I get...

As for the cold willy problem. You just need an amenable companion and a mug of warm (not hot) tea...;)

Minus 7 today at worst and did not get past minus 2 at best ;)

I had barely thawed out from yesterday's ride, so did not venture out...

And I'm unlikely to go out tomorrow either - I think spin class may be getting my vote.

If it is really cold I stick on an extra paid of shorts over my roubaix biblongs. Even then it sometimes feels as if my knob has fallen off.

That's Solihull for you.

They're all warm there, and when it gets cold they just chuck another peasant on the fire.
They have no idea what it's like to be Scottish and *oppressed by the English and the cold.

* deservedly

Having had a winter ice spill 2 yrs ago, I'm really wary now... yesterday/today too frosty/icy up here, so went running instead ;)

Well it was more than a little dramatic for me! Was out in the freezing fog mountain biking on Saturday. After an hour and a half I was struggling for breath more than usual, and by the time we got to our tea stop I was having real difficulty breathing. I was getting more and mroe light headed, struggling to talk, and having chest pains so I ended up going to A&E.

Apparently the air was so cold and damp that it had made my alviolae (sp?) inside my lungs inflamed. I could breathe properly again only after 2 hours in the warm, and I'm fine now. But according to the doc I don't have asthma or a collapsed lung, which is nice!

In my commuting days, used to pull off a 3 to 4-sheet length of kitchen roll and put it down front of shorts. Quite windproof.

Puts the minor discomfort I experienced into perspective ;)

I've often noticed I get a bit short of breath when I exercise hard in cold weather, but have never had anything that bad happen to me.

I trust your fully recovered now.

Yes I'm fine now thanks. I think the problem was the damp and cold rather than just the cold. I've been up mountains and ridden before in sub zero temperatures but it was dry cold rather than damp cold. My biggest worry was that my mum developed asthma when she was 40 (I'm 37), and extremes of heat and cold set it off, so I thought I was getting asthma too. But apparently not. Also my brother gets the same thing (he's a runner).

Oh and in the spirit of this thread, my undercarriage remained unscathed ;)
