And people also forget that overconsumption of artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame, can also have a role in developing Type 2 diabetes.
I wasn't aware of that fact, looks like fizzy drinks are bad no matter which type you drink then! I don't drink much fizzy 'pop' but you see people guzzling from 2 litre bottles

Just finished reading this on the ipad. Great read, couple of spelling mistakes heh but I guess they'll have been sorted by now.

Thanks for the email Simon, hope the book goes well for you.

Is this true? I had no idea. Do you have any links?
Whilst I don't have diabetes, I'm mindful of the rubbish that they put in today's food, so any extra info is always welcome.
Cheers

No, they are different diseases.

I know. Was more about the content of the book, and given what the OP has told me it was more about losing weight, getting fitter and improving his condition.

T1 is far more serious.

(2011). Albion. Recently it's been pretty much confirmed that the traditional fatty western diet both causes and maintains diabetes type 2.Of course if we all ate non processed food McDonalds, KFC and maybe even Tesco and Asda would go bust.

Add exercise and likely 80% would be reversed, at least for the under 50s. Getting rid of an ounce or so of pancreas fat is the key to getting things working again.

Strangely, this has likely been known for well over a thousand years.

This was also referred to on Radio 4 this morning. Another reason not to normalise obesity and high sugar diets.

A thousand years? Really? That got me thinking.

Let's confine ourselves to Europe cos I'm pretty ignorant of world history over that timescale. A lot (most) of the population will be getting by on not much more than a very basic minimum diet, and other diseases were so rife that life expectancy would be too short to worry about T2 diabetes.

But the very top of society had enough surplus to become obese. And gluttony was generally seen as a sin. So maybe, for 1000 years it's been known that overeating is not great, whether that's because it'll damage your body or whether it's because it's sinful and will get you sent to fiery hell I'm not sure.

So I think 1000 years is pushing it. Unless maybe some other civilization outside of Europe was wise to it.

Kings who reportedly died from pigging out include Henry I who died from "a surfeit of Lampreys" and King John it's said died from eating too many unripe peaches. But I bet Lampreys and peaches would be classed as health food compared to Greggs.

(Don't disagree with the rest of the post btw. Just the 1000 years bit)

Well, the ancient greeks knew being overweight a source of many a problem, prescribing exercise as a method of regaining health.
From the wiki we also get 'These descriptions are comparable to the two types identified by Ayurvedic physicians Sushruta and Charaka (400–500 AD), with one type being associated with youth and the other with being overweight.[9]'

So 1500+ years they got type 1 and type 2, type 2 being 'overwight'.

The rich and powerful were overweight and thus fat became promoted as 'very attractive/desirable'.
