There's an offer on at the moment to get three issues of popular cycling magazines for just £1. The catch is that you sign up with an ongoing direct debit, but as long as you cancel once they've taken the initial £1 payment (easy if you online bank) then it's a bargain.

The magazines on offer are:
  • Cycling Plus
  • Procycling
  • Mountain Biking UK
  • What Mountain Bike
  • Triathalon Plus
I've signed up for Cycling Plus and Procycling, and you can say which issue you want to start from, so I should be getting the bumper summer editions

The ladies Tenn Outdoors cycling shorts (black) on Amazon for £12.99 and the 3/4 for £17.99 are pretty good for the money, I tried some branded ones on in Evans that would have cost me twice that at least and the fit on the body wasn't as good.

As an protective layer under trousers or over tights for ladies, if you are wearing normal office clothes on a shortish commute but feel the bumps otherwise, it isn't worth spending on the big brands.

lights front and back, £1 each in poundland. the lights themselves are fine but the front one probably won't survive any sort of off-handlebar excursion, so tie it to the mounting with cable ties, and the mounting for the rear is flimsy so, again cable ties needed.

perfect for some low-cost extra illumination (especially the front, which performs as well as a smart light i paid £20 for from lbs).
