400 lumin headlight, £60 at Spokeshirts, today only-

I was going to say this is the new magicshine, but it has an XP-G not the XP-E which is in the new one (only 200 lumen, priced at £38 abroad - not really worth it).

They say made only for them, which will never happen as magicshine will sell these anywhere and every where.

I'd go for the "900 lumen" P7 unit, can be had for £60 from the UK (or £50 from China).

The XP-G is much more efficient than either the XP-E or P7. The Magicshine has been measured to put out about 500 lumens in real life. This will probably produce around about 300-ish lumens so won't actually appear to be much dimmer, and at least you'll have someone to complain to when if it breaks...

No need to get all "anti china" on me, I did quote that the P7 can be had in the UK for the same price - and having a UK retailer doesn't always make it easier to deal with warranty cases (some are very good, some are total nightmares).

Also I am curious as an XP-G magichine "doesnt exist" (well I cannot find anything to prove the opposite) and it looks like the XP-E unit they have released recently, that with the "only made for us" makes me wonder wtf. (any ideas?)

"lumens in real life" is not helpful, as lights vary, measuring lumens is not easy. 500 at worse case when overheated (on a bench with no air flow) maybe... just maybe. We're talking more around the 700 mark realistically, and a lot of people will generally agree.

just bought a Decathlon Vitamin singlespeed. In stock at the store, but not on the website. Frame nicely finished, actually very nicely finished, nice aluminium wheels, nice tyres, fixing points for a rack if you want that kind of thing, not too heavy, nice saddle, nice bars, brakes a bit naff but work well, very long seatpost....

And the bonus is that they're not bright orange this year!

they are indeed black. And it's a really nice deep black - I'd post some pics but the bike got taken apart and put in the loft pending the 25th.

Ideal for a student. It can get bashed, even get nicked, and it's no great tragedy. As for the gearing - I think The Kid will be fine with it.

Torch9 at Decathlon. Front and rear light set, 9LED front light is more than ample for commuting, and I'd be happy to use at night if it wasn't too dark a night. Elastic hold to clip, and the clip has an elastic hold to the bar. Aluminium body, threaded connection, which could do with a bit of vaseline to keep the rain out. Rear light is 'very similar' to a Smart light. Price for the set

£9.99

a real bargain. Go in the morning and you can get one of the best cups of coffee plus a croissant for the superduper price of £1.99

"Anti-China"? I think you're reading too much into my post. With two exceptions all the lights I use are Chinese manufactured.

At the risk of going off topic, almost all lights are over rated. Magicshine are a good example. The P7 LED is rated by Seoul Semiconductor at 700 lumens typical, 900 maximum. You're not going to get 900 lumens, it's disengenious to suggest otherwise. Furthermore, optical losses and heating of the LED die (9 Watts of heat is generated so even with airflow the LED die is running at about 90[sup]0[/sup]C, which means a loss of 15% output) mean the output will be close to 500 lumens. Which happens to be what the bright sparks over on Candlepower forums have measured (excuse the pun!). I've seen a Magicshine in action -and it can't compete with my L&M Seca 700 (mind you, the Magichsine's much cheaper...)

Oh, and real life lumens? That's exactly what I want to know when comparing lights. Not the exaggerated fantasy numbers produced by most manufacturers.
