54cm is only 21 inch I would have thought that would be ideal if as he says a 23 inch is only a bit too big

Yes maybe - but I'm only 45 minutes away, so I could always come and check it out. I'm not in any great rush though, so I'm prepared to wait until you have something else if necessary.

Yes, actually that could be the right size for me. I think my old bikes were 22" frames, now I come to think about it.
