Chain tool and a spare split link or two. Just in case. But it's so long since I used a chain tool I'd probably make matters worse.
Only ever once had a chain break, and that was my own fault (a 5-speed that I'd taken off for cleaning and must have bodged when putting it back on). I remember distinctly thinking that the new clicking sound had an unusual rhythmn just when it broke. The result was an enjoyable and memorable day, so it wasn't all bad.
It was a beautiful day and I was in the middle of Pembrokeshire, which suddenly seemed as sparsely populated as the Sahara. I scooted/rolled/walked until I found a farm. Nice farmer said he was just off into town, so gave me a lift riding on the back of his trailer. There followed a memorable journey, sitting admiring the beautiful countryside, thinking how I'd maybe trade in cycle touring for trailer touring. In the town (I forget where) I went to a garage where they lent me a nail punch and a hammer and I was soon right as rain.
