I've had a chain break at the linkage when out on a day ride. A spare chain and or splitter would not have helped so much on that occasion. All I needed was just a spare pair of cheasy- links.

I didn't have them!

Carrying a chain AND chain tool is overkill on shorter rides IMHO...but a means to rejoin a broken/lost linkage might JUST be useful one day if you are seriously unlucky?

My teeny box of bits that goes with me on longer rides has:

Chain tool
Odd lengths of chain (the bits that weren't used when new chains have been fitted) in 8, 9 and fixie sizes
Sram quick link things
Handful of patches
Glue
Sand paper
Misc nuts, screws, washers and bolts, including 1 x cleat bolt, 1 x crank bolt.
2 x cable ties

You are best with a couple of quick links if you must. Lots on chains these days don't link being broken and re connected, so even spare links are a waste of time. Just carry the quick links and a chain breaker.

Never had a chain fail on a ride. I have had my first ever cracked chain link tonight, but it's a 9 speed chain on an MTB for about 2 years, so not bad. Chain isn't worn as I checked it.
