Do you need to lose any weight?
Good point, maybe I should have said - we have both been on a calorie control since April, so out choices have been made on calorie level. Maybe, from the posts her, we should revert back to ignoring the calorie targets for these days, and maybe the previous day!
Thanks everyone - we are getting a better idea of this!

If you are calorie counting then just eat the one's you need and no more.

When I lost my 4+ stone I tried not to eat the calories I earned by cycling, and if I did it never exceeded half the amount. Most bodies have plenty of fuel for a 30 miles steady ride I would imagine.

In discussion with Lou, we were both a little under the weather last weekend, so maybe we didn't recover as well as thought.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts!

^^^^ yep, that's more than likely, we were comparing this ride with the 50 mile Tandem a few weeks ago, and thought we would breeze it, but possibly the rough(ish - compared to road cycling) surface, and the more hilly route took a bigger toll than we planned. What @jefmcg said is something we were aware of on the tandem, but I think we thought we were expecting a little too much, all things considered!

http://www.mapmyfitness.com/workout/1175301623 shows the kind of hills (ahem) we did!
