Whatever you like. I'm not being funny, you'll get a different answer from everyone that responds. It does have to be something that YOU like though.

Personally I'd just take water and make sure I'd eaten before I set off

Yep but that;s just me. Chances are in current temperatures I wouldn't finish the first bottle either. I probably don't drink enough but then I'm comfortable knowing what I can get away with before I start struggling.

As I said it's going to be a personal thing for you. Until you know how your body is going to react, I'd take at least 2 bottles of water. You can always stop at a shop for food or more water.

Yep, probs same for me.
But then again 50 miles for the likes of me and Martin and a few others on here is not a long ride. (Sorry if that sounds like bragging)
And every one is different.

It all depends on how fit you are and what your body is asking you on the ride. But what you should do always do is drink before you are thirsty.
Fill your bottle with diluted squash or juice (make sure it's diluted as you will very quickly get sick of sugary drink) and add a pinch of salt. Or get some High 5 Tabs to add to the water.
If you are not used to long distances then eat well before the ride. And eat on the go, easy stuff to carry in your shirt pockets, Bananas, Fruit bars, slices of Soreen etc.
So drink and munch on the go.

My OH has been making chocolate chip and banana cake lately, and I've discovered it's perfect cycling fuel.

If I'm going to be on the bike for more than a couple of hours, I generally find it's best to eat something every hour, but as others have said, it's a very individual thing.

I have heard jaffa cakes are the best as they are high in carbs and low in fat, and also very nice. those go go bars are also quite good

Decided i'm gonna take a few slices of maltloaf and squash with electrolyte tabs!

+1 for a bottle of water. If it is going to be a hilly 50 miles might pack a banana.Again a lot would depend on the weather and the time you are expecting to take.

Enjoy your ride.

As someone who doesn't often get the time for longer rides, when I do I don't eat much, if anything, up to 50 miles. However, as others have said it depends on the individual and the route, weather etc. When I went on a 70+ mile ride recently I got through a banana, 2 energy bars and an energy gel by 40 miles in, after a hilly first 15 miles, followed by cycling into a nasty headwind. I always take 2 bottles for 30+ miles. Normally just water but sometimes 1 filled with an energy drink.

Take a flapjack or something if you're concerned, and it's always a good idea to take some money just in case of the unexpected.
